No big Dutch city relies less on the private car than Amsterdam: half a car per household on average, well below the national average. More than half of Amsterdam's households are single-person, and at nearly 5,000 inhabitants per square kilometre a dedicated parking spot is expensive and scarce. Here a shared car for the occasional trip is the rule rather than the exception, and with four providers there is plenty of choice.
A shared car is a car you rent by the hour or the day, parked close to where you live. You do not need to own a car, and you pay only for the time and distance you drive. Getting started takes two steps.
You register once online with your driving licence and payment details. In most cases you are approved quickly, but some providers verify your details manually. Allow a few minutes to a working day before your account is active.

For anyone driving fewer than about 8,000 kilometres per year, a shared car is often already cheaper. In Amsterdam a residents' permit quickly costs € 300-600 per year, on top of the fixed costs of owning a car. A shared car does not include those costs.
