Sharing a subscription with a housemate: does every provider allow it?

Who is this worth looking into for?

Sharing pays off mainly when you both want to be able to book cars independently, even at the same time, without needing a separate subscription and deposit each. Most providers share the same basic condition: you need to live at the same address. Family, a partner, housemates: who it is usually doesn't matter, as long as the address matches.

Greenwheels: on Regular or Frequent, not on Occasional

If you have a private Regular or Frequent plan (or a freelance or business plan), you can add extra drivers to your Greenwheels account, as long as you live at the same address. You'll both drive on your rates and can book a car at the same time. As the main user you receive the invoice for every driver you've added, and you can also make bookings on their behalf.

You set this up in the app under Account settings → Drivers. The extra driver gets an email invite to register and set their own PIN, after which they can book and unlock cars through the app. This isn't possible on the free Occasional plan; if you want to share, you'll need to switch to Regular or Frequent first.

MyWheels: pay the deposit first, then add up to two people

You can let up to two other people ride along on your subscription (three accounts in total, including yours), provided you live at the same address. You then drive on one shared plan and get a single combined invoice. There's an order to it though: the main account has to pay the €250 deposit before you can invite anyone else. You do that in the app or on the website, under Account & settings, by entering the other person's email address.

MobiGo: the same idea

MobiGo also lets you share your subscription with someone at the same address. If you're unsure about the exact conditions for your plan, it's worth checking with MobiGo directly, as the details may vary by plan.

Vloto: a family account through the app

A family account lets you share both your subscription and your payment method with family members or friends at the same address. You invite them through the app, and they set up their own account from there. Each family member still needs to meet the usual requirements. You set it up under Account → Family account in the app.

SIXT share: not possible

SIXT share doesn't offer any way to share a subscription or account with a housemate. If you both want to drive, you'll each need your own account.

LochemEnergie: a different setup, no subscription to share

LochemEnergie doesn't work with subscription tiers. It charges a flat rate per trip, and you need to complete an introductory meeting before you can book at all. There's no subscription to "share" here; everyone who wants to drive goes through their own sign-up process.

What you actually save, and what you don't

With a paid subscription, the benefit is straightforward: you pay the monthly fee once instead of twice. With a free entry-level plan, like MyWheels Start or Vloto Intro, that benefit disappears, since there's no subscription fee to save on. Sharing is still convenient in that case, since you only need to arrange one deposit and manage one account instead of two, but it won't lower your monthly cost.

In the calculator, question 6 lets you filter for subscriptions that can be shared with a housemate. Providers and plans that don't support it, like Greenwheels Occasional or SIXT share, drop out automatically.
